Carol A. LaVigne (88) of Cortland New York passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025 at the Francis House in Syracuse New York after falling ill on April 9, 2025.
Carol was born in Cortland New York on November 11,1936. She was a 1954 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. Carol continued her education at the Auburn Memorial Nursing School wherein she graduated and became a Registered Nurse.
Carol was employed at the Cortland Memorial Hospital where she was a neonatal and recovery room nurse. She continued her employment as the school nurse at Groton Central High School. In her retirement years Carol was employed at Riverbend Antiques in Marathon.
Carol was a member of the 20 th Century Plus Club of Cortland and the Retired Nurses of Cortland Club.
Carol was a longtime season ticket holder at the Merry-Go-Round Theater in Auburn and the Cortland Repertory Theater with all of her theater friends.
Carol loved her birds (especially the Cardinals), flower gardens and antiques. Carol loved all of the dogs that were part of her life over the years—Gomer, Spike, Max, Bubba, Bailey and Jasper.
Carol was predeceased by her husband John who was the love of her life. They enjoyed their vacations in Mexico and Costa Rica. In later years they enjoyed their winters in Florida.
Carol was also predeceased by her parents Melvin and Marion Pierce, her brother William Pierce (Kaaren) and her niece Rebecca Bombard (Pierce).
Carol is survived by her sons Steven (Belmar New Jersey) and Michael (Cortland), her grandson Matthew LaVigne and his mother Maureen, nephew Andrew Pierce (Kari) and niece Sandra Pierce Phillips.
Carol’s family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at the Francis House for their wonderful care and Kindness.
