The Cortland boys basketball program will be hosting a Cancer Recognition Night during its matchup with Cazenovia Friday night at Cortland Jr./Sr. High School. Proceeds raised Friday night will go to the American Cancer Society. The JV game is slated to begin at 5 p.m., with the varsity contest to follow at 6:45 p.m.
The event came about after a suggestion from Cortland’s captains with the goal of raising money and awareness. Cazenovia head coach Chris Bubble and Cortland head coach Jeremy Milligan have been working together, along with various volunteers, in organizing the event.
Each Cortland player and cheerleader selected someone in their lives that has been impacted by cancer to recognize with pregame write-ups. Additionally, a special pregame ceremony will honor some of the people selected by the players. Both teams will also be wearing special warm-up shirts Friday, which were donated by Graph-Tex.
In addition to the ceremony, the two schools have seen over $1,500 of goods donated to be used in raffles from various local businesses and community members. Milligan expects that number to increase leading up the event.
Raffle tickets will be sold throughout the evening for a chance to win the various prizes including Visa gift cards, gift cards to various businesses locally, apparel and more. Raffle tickets will be $2 each for items valued under $100 and $5 each for items valued at $100 or more. You will not need to be present to win the raffles. Small item drawings will be at halftime of the varsity contest and the large item drawings will be between the third and fourth quarter of the varsity game.
Cortland says it hopes to raise at least $500 for the American Cancer Society with Friday night’s event.
