Francis “Fritz” J. Mullen, 102, lifelong resident of Cortland, passed away peacefully at home on September 25, 2025, with his loving family by his side.
He was born on March 14, 1923, in Cortland, to his parents, the late Francis Mullen and Mary (Wilkins) Mullen. A 1940 graduate of St. Mary’s School, upon completing his education Fritz was drafted into the Army Airforce in January of 1943. He was a member of the 8th Airforce, 34th Bomb Group, 4th squadron in England, completing 32 missions. He served as a Turret Gunner Engineer and was honorably discharged in October of 1945. He started working at his family business, Mullen Office Outfitters Inc., in 1947 and was a proprietor until the time of his retirement in 2018. Fritz was also a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, The VFW, The American Legion and the DAV.
He is survived by his children, Nancy Mullen, Diane (James) Brown, and James Mullen; his grandchildren Ryan J. Mullen and Bella M. Mullen, his sister-in-law Genevieve Ferro, former daughter-in-law, Michelle Mullen and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Fritz is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years Elizabeth “Betty” Morris Mullen, his sister Mary Molyneaux and his brother Joseph Mullen.
Calling hours with be held on Tuesday, September 30th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Wright-Beard Funeral Home, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Wednesday, October 1st at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church. Prayers of committal will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Fritz will always be remembered for his gentleman demeanor. He never spoke poorly or complained and would always show his appreciation and thanks to others.
