Community Arts Challenge asks artists to ‘Connect’

Artists of all mediums are tasked with the topic of “connection” this year.

Entries from artists, dancers, musicians, photographers and writers are being accepted until Nov. 1 for the 15th annual Cortland Community Arts Challenge, which has the theme “connect.”

The theme stems from it being the 25th anniversary of Cortland Arts Connect in 2025, said Executive Director Carol Fitzgerald. Last year, the theme was “center” in honor of the 25th anniversary of the Center for the Arts of Homer.

“It’s an opportunity for someone to show off their creativity to the community, whether it’s painting or dance or writing,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s my favorite event of the year, just to see so many people come up with so many things, all based around one word. It’s amazing.”

The juried competition is co-sponsored by Cortland Arts Connect and the Center for the Arts of Homer. They will award cash prizes in six categories: fine arts, artisan crafts, choreography, musical composition, photography and writing.

“I think it’s one of the most difficult themes that we’ve had to date,” said Denise Knight, who won an honorable mention in the fine arts category last year. “However, I know that you can use the word ‘connect’ either as a verb or a noun, so that does open up possibilities.”

Anyone 16 years of age or older who lives or works in or around Cortland County can take part. Submitted works will be judged on how creatively and skillfully they communicate the theme.

“I’m going to paint a big, gigantic canvas with one dot, and call it ‘Connect the Dot,” said Paul Kozlowski, owner of the Ake Gallery in Cortland.

Entries are due Nov. 1, and there is a $15 fee per entry. An opening reception will be in January.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to partake in an event that fosters community spirit,” Knight said. “It has become a tradition for me and for many people in the community. It’s something that we look forward to.”
