Five new cases in Cortland County
Cortland County saw five new cases of COVID-19, the state Health Department reported Friday, bringing the county to a total of 11,833 cases since the pandemic began.

Tompkins and Cayuga counties reported 49 new cases, the state reported Friday. The three counties have seen 53,756 cases since the pandemic began in March 2020. The number of people who have died from the virus remains 378.

  • One new COVID patient was admitted to Guthrie Cortland Medical Center on Thursday, but none Wednesday, the state reported. The hospital had three COVID patients. Since the pandemic began, 708 Cortland County residents have been hospitalized for COVID, but that figure was last updated July 20. The state Health Department reports 293,954 tests have been administered. The state has reported 126 deaths.
  • Tompkins County saw 38 new cases, the state Health Department reported Friday. The number of confirmed cases rose to 23,283. The state reports 3,035,133 tests have been administered. Ninety Tompkins residents have died.
  • Cayuga County saw 11 new cases, the state Health Department reported Friday. Confirmed cases rose to 18,100. The state reports 374,257 tests have been administered, and 162 people have died.

166,757 receive COVID vaccine
The state Health Department reports 29,631 Cortland County residents have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, or 62% of the county’s total population. A total of 58.5% of the county has been fully vaccinated, and 60.9% of the eligible population has received a booster.

  • In Tompkins County, 87,432 people have received at least one dose, or 85.1% of the population; 77.1% are fully vaccinated. and 62.8% of the eligible population has been boosted.
  • In Cayuga County, 49,694 residents have received at least one dose, or 64.4% of the population; 60.2% are fully vaccinated and 60.4% of the eligible population has been boosted.
  • Across the state, 16.78 million people have received at least one dose, or 91.6% of the population. A total of 78.1% have received two doses, and 53.4% of the eligible population has been boosted.

Cortland's rate at 107 cases per 100,000
Broome and Tioga counties were elevated to "medium" risk this week by the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but Cortland and other counties around it remained at a "low" level.

Cortland County had 51 new cases of COVID-19 between July 22 and Thursday, giving it a rate of 107.19 cases per 100,000 people, the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

It had a “low” risk, under CDC guidelines. Under metrics and guidance from the CDC — which take into account the number of new cases in a week, the number of hospitalizations and hospital capacity:

  • In counties with a “high risk,” wearing a mask in indoor public places is still recommended.
  • In counties with a “medium risk,” people with symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should wear a mask. People at a high risk for severe illness should consult their healthcare provider about the need for a mask or other precautions.
  • In counties with a “low risk,” no additional precautions beyond staying up to date with vaccines and getting tested if one has symptoms are recommended.
