Expect heat index to top 95 in greater Cortland area

The National Weather Service warns of excessive heat Tuesday, with temperatures well into the 80s combining with humidity to create a heat index that tops 95 degrees.

The heat advisory from noon to 7 p.m. predicts a high near 86 degrees with relative humidity around 70%. The highest heat indexes will be found in urban valleys, meteorologists report.

To cope, stay out of the sun, preferably in an air-conditioned environment; drink plenty of fluids. Take extra precautions if working or spending time outside, particularly if the activity is strenuous. Wear light, loose-fitting clothes.

The weather will be similarly warm on Wednesday, with a high of 89, the weather service reports. Expect a high of 88 andd a 40% chance of thunderstorms on Thursday. Storms will continue Friday, with a high in the low 80s, and Saturday, with a high in the mid-70s.
