Snow, Act I: First of expected 15 inches comes as sleet

Posted

Greater Cortland area school districts dismissed class early and canceled afterschool activities, as other organizations closed early Thursday, at the start of a winter storm expected to drop up to 15 inches of snow by Saturday morning.

Cortland County Sheriff Mark E. Helms issued a travel advisory for Cortland County until further notice. The advisory does not restrict travel, but suggests you postpone unnecessary travel.

Some organizations — the Moravia Central School District and the 1890 House and Museum, for example — canceled Friday activities by early Thursday afternoon.

The storm began as sleet and freezing rain shortly after noon, leaving streets and sidewalks coated in ice. No significant power outages or vehicle accidents had been recorded by mid-afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning to last through 1 a.m. Saturday, calling for 9 to 15 inches of wet, heavy snow.

Expect gusts up to 35 mph, enough to bring snow-laded branches down on power lines. Utilities had pre-placed crews across upstate New York to deal with that.

For today, expect another 4 inches of snow and highs around freezing.
